The Big Wave (in 1948) was a successful rendering of a difficult subject- the concept of death- in a story set in Japan. Now, tackling the more lively and appealing topic of birth, Mrs. Buck tells an American farm story, where the subject of birth is an everyday affair. Johnny notices what happens to the farm animals- and wonders about himself, even if he is only five. Friendly talks with an understanding mother were apropos, for there was a baby coming to the Jacksons, and by the time a little sister arrived ""Johnny Jack"" was a welcoming committee. A valuable book- handling the subject at beginning level.
