Publisher: Contemporary Poetry

A fine English translation -- accompanied by the original in Spanish, of Pedre Salinas' long rhetorical lament over destruction. Starting with devastation by airplane, of which he makes the Japanese Zeros the symbol, Salinas' poem expends to take in the more general destruction of time and the ages. Salinas has had a long and distinguished academic career abroad, and is now teaching at Johns Hopkins. He is well known to the Spanish public; but this will scarcely provide a wide market here. His work has the singular rhetorical and pseudo-classical quality combined with delicate lyricism which is typical of Spanish culture. Eleanor Turnbull's translation is excellent- and the accompanying Spanish original will give the book value for students.
