THE I HATE TO COOK ALMANACK

Peg Bracken still hates to cook but she adds enough leavening to distract you from these unlikely ingredients and entertain you for awhile. This almanack is a hodge-podge of goodies, some of them edible. There are poems, ""Ms. Aesop's fables,"" a table of equivalents (2 pinches = a smidgen), and Crumpacker's Laws of Household Management (""It's in the other handbag""). She cites the works of Shakespeare, Socrates, and Thomas Szasz, who said little or nothing about food, and also includes some pearls (cultured of course) from Albert Wooky and Stella Trowbridge Hinky. Incidentally, there are a few recipes, often with manic names (Rain-or-Shine Moose, Aggression Cookies) and all of those ingredients that loving cooks disdain. Some are more ambitious than in the first book (yeast breads!) and there are many more desserts, frequently with sherry or nuts to liven things up. February 17 is A Great Day for Bananacake, but Peg Bracken is a cook for all seasons.
