Trusty folk-tale material in rustic American dress. Lazy Zed, sent out to earn some money, is lured by the Governor's promise of gold to take on four pesky monsters. Using grapes as a come-on, Zed tricks the first monster into eating up his own eyes; by pea-shooting the next two with porcupine quills, he sets them to fighting each other; and he scares off the last and biggest by confronting him with a magnifying mirror. With backwoods Zed and Galdone's funny/scary/ugly monsters to flavor the familiar ingredients, a perky tale.
