Right on the button for juvenile humor! This book is for that stage in life when the acme of wit is considered to be a question like this--""How can I sit UP when I'm sitting DOWN?"" Amelia Bedelia is a maid who is made for this audience and their concern with word play. In going through a written list of instructions, she does literally what she is told. Dust the furniture means cover it with dusting powder; draw the drapes means make a picture of them; dress the chicken means gussy up the bird with a pair of trousers. The illustrator has made her look a little bit like a balmy Mary Poppins and she goes about her work in the best Emily Post style as a lady with her dowdy hat delightfully in place.
