A folk tale disguised, as a coroner's jury sits on the case of death by fire of a mysterious fellow townsman, Tinsley, at the behest of Coroner Slocum, who wants to boost his fee, and Inglis, a schoolteacher, who scorns the other jury members. Inglis is critical and captious, Slocum spins the process thin, but proves the fire to have been arson and stage for a death which did not occur. Tongue-in-cheek idea, with more fun for author than reader.
