WORLD CONDUCTORS

For the interested student of music history, this book offers some valuable counterpoint to its discussion of the basic functions of the conductor and of the notable orchestral leaders, their characteristics and specialties. In describing the development of the role (the conductor is a very recent phenomenon in the musical scheme), the text manages to depict lucidly, and from a fresh point of view, the evolution of both the performing groups, and the type of music they performed, to the contemporary full-size orchestra and symphonic score. The book is well-written, informative, non-technical but never patronizing. It will be a useful adjunct to music appreciation courses, and is quite suitable for adults who would like a popular book on the subject.
