Suburban Westchester County, New York, is the setting for this novel built around the tenuous problem of evil in good, when the good is selfish, cold and unresponsive, and the root of the evil hard to discern, -- a situation personified in Charles Tinker Larme. ""Tink"" to everyone. A temporary visitor in the Steele household, he throws himself into the breach when help is needed -- lends a hand on all fronts -- keeps, apparently to himself, and yet manages to disrupt the whole household, and to leave destruction in his wake when he leaves to join the Canadian air force.
