Too many people had copies of Family Doctor on the bookshelf at home"" but just think without it, you'd be altogether unprepared for a procedure like hysterosalpingography, something that certainly sounds as if it should be avoided at any cost. As are most of the things that go on in this clinic on the border between Spain and France where they do all kinds of old (cosmetic) and new (transplant) plastic surgery. The greater part of the book however is about (a) the repair work one Philip Hollander accomplishes on the damaged mitral valve of a pop singer which also entails an unauthorized thymectomy and (b) a homoerotic scuffle in which one of his colleagues is almost killed. . . . Ambitious Dr. Hollander, even though he overextends himself, is actually a very dedicated sort hoping to solve transplant surgery's problem of rejection mechanism. It could easily be a problem for a book like this as well.
