It takes its pace from the muckraker's passion with which the author, who is managing editor of the Architectural Forum, charges at a leviathan of constricting conformity made up of ""garden city"" suburban developments, highway programs, billboard advertising lobbies and public indifference. Not since John Keats' The Crack in the Picture Window have real estate privateers received such a drubbing. Their legislative handmaidens and the toothless planning commissions also share in Blake's blame. His overriding concern is the beauty of America and what happens to a citizenry that allows itself to be deprived of it. Hotheaded persuasion backed up by ""take notice photographs"", this is bound to be discussed. More diagnosis than cure.
