THE DEVIL'S OWN

Miss Deborah Mayfield's post, offered by Canon Thorby, as headmistress of a small English day school, seems a lovely haven after twenty years in Africa at a mission- ut even darker incidents take place there. Her worst fears and fancies (involving her children) are dismissed by the Canon who also threatens her dismissal if she continues probing; an ""accident"" threatens to end her interference, but she returns there, her mind still clouded but her resolution firm, to expose some evil-eyed practices. . . . Opulent storytelling (by Norah Lofts) should seduce and possess the reader too.
