But Who Wakes the Bugler was a Daliesque extravaganza. This is utterly different, -- a sensational, often steamy blend of love, passion and psychiatry in the story of Brian Charles who had been committed to an insane asylum by a hating-and hated older brother. Brian was mercurial, elusive, inventive -- unstable rather than unbalanced, but his brother was jealous of Brian's infatuation with his wife, Irene, and desired control of Brian's money. Brian escapes -- and meets Edith -- and finds in her a valid type of love, which still cannot outweigh the sensuous appeal Irene holds for him. He becomes circumstantially involved in a murder. The brother loses all the money and commits suicide, and Irene is shown up for what she is. Then Brian determines to clear himself and looks forward to a future with Edith. A highly seasoned tale, full of all manner of things, but it reads better than sober after judgment finds it to be.
