Province by province, this is an attractive survey of an attractive land. In their first chapters the authors comment on Austria's general features- cities and mountain towns, industry and agriculture and gaiety- and briefly on the pageant of her history from the Middle Ages and on through the Hapsburgs, the Turkish War and to the 19th century. Continuing, their descriptions are of the districts- Vorarlberg famous for skiing, hydroelectricity and textiles, the Tyrol with its sounds of yodelling and cowbells, Styria where iron is made, Salzburg and Vienna for music. Though this type of division is textbookish, the information is not too obtrusive and intended to produce a feeling for the country rather than a collection of facts about it. Last chapters on aspects of culture and recent history bring it up to date.
