The soldier in World War II is the subject of this authentically realized portrait of a battalion in the Royal Tank Corps.- and specifically of one group that made up a closely integrated team, intensely loyal to each other, once proved, and convinced that where there was to be a particularly dangerous spot- there they would be. One comes to know the men- the likable Donovan, who seemed indestructible but who almost went AWOL when he sensed himself close to the breaking point; Brook, who had to prove he wasn't just a ""toff""- and who comes to know fear and panic; Taffy, and old hand, Geordie who come from the mines, Nobby and Hogg and others. Death takes heavy toll -- and at times the reader feels the futility of it almost too intensely. Little has been written about Tank Corps operation, and the part they played in the invasion, in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany-as the end seemed within reach- and one setback after another cost a terrible price. The author has tapped his own personal experience for many of the incidents- but has drawn his characters from imagination and knowledge of the calibre of the men he knew.
