BOY, GRIZZLY AND WOLF

Indian legends of the Snake River country, woven into a story of a boy who is taken into the forest and taught the secrets of the wild by Owl Man. This is simply the frame for a collection of Indian folk tales, many of them familiar in essence though the details may vary (from one tribe to another). Indian words and idioms give color to the text, and both language and illustrations give the book a certain beauty. But the tales in themselves are remote from the average child's knowledge, and too symbolic to be enjoyed without the help of an adult. The author is teaching in a California school; he has for years studied the legends of the Indian tribes, and retold them in camps and schools.
