This is a defense of classical education. The marvels of erudition are not to be scorned, and the man who writes cogently of a modern problem deserves the greater honor if he can utilize effectively some of the more graphie and dynamic words our language affords. Peter Green, who turns a phrase with the best of scholars, has given us a remarkable apologia for scholarship, a reasoned argument in behalf of the classical education, and a tribute to those who are fending off its decline. Essays in Antiquity should be read by every parent who expects his child to seek a college education. It is a worthwhile gift for the college or advanced high school student -- could be a real eye-opener for them -- and it is not too esoteric for the self-educated, although a dictionary would be a friendly companion for any reader who does not share Green's academic development.
