THE RESTLESS WIND

A charmingly modest account of a pretty daring feat relates the everyday laughter and miseries of a newlywed couple on a world cruise in a little sailboat without an engine. Peter Hamilton, the author, sets out from Britain and singlehandedly crosses the Atlantic, despite great spells of ghastly weather and no radio. Once in Canada, he flies home, marries his sweetheart Jill, and brings her back to Canada. They set out to tour the world, with little money and much movie film. Their tour takes them to Jamaica, through the Canal to the Galapagos, Pitcairn Island (where they stay with the Bounty crew's descendants), Tahiti and the Marquesas. When Jill finds herself pregnant, they make a non-stop 46-day tack back toward Los Angeles to try and sell their films to a movie company. Mr. Hamilton has no pen for pink lagoons and waving palms, but rather concentrates on shipboard ironies and the psychology of two people living in utter simplicity for over a year. Never dull (and seldom poignant), the book clips along for a jolly evening's reading. Peter and Jill make pleasant company.
