Mr. Howard is an Englishman who had distinguished himself in such varied roles as political columnist, dramatist, rugby player, lecturer, and farmer. Now, since the death in 1961 of its founder, Frank Buchman, he has been in charge of the ""world program"" called Moral Re-Armament. Just what MRA is and intends to accomplish will be found in, and between the lines of, this collection of a dozen speeches made by Mr. Howard during a tour of the U. S. and Canada this past winter and spring. Briefly, the organization may be termed an attempt to counter Communism positively, with an ideology founded upon the principles of Christianity. Great reliance is put upon the concept of conscience, moral fortitude, absolute qualities, and revolution. So far so good. The speeches are in turn convincing, provocative, and charming. The call for us to share our wealth with our fellow men throughout the world, the challenge to face our problems squarely, all this is moving and unexceptionable. But a gradually swelling sense of discomfort will overtake many from such stirring generalities--for instance, a defense of the Diem regime, and charge of Communist infiltration in the Peace Corps, and a disturbing tendency to split the participants in every dispute into the forces of light and darkness.
