THE HILTON HEAD METABOLISM DIET

Yet another, glitzier plug for exercise-over-dieting-for-weight-loss. ""You, too, will realize that only this approach to weight reduction stimulates your ability to burn fat,"" writes Miller, chief of the Sea Pines Behavioral Institute at Hilton Head. He's right, though: his not-too-low-calorie, two-exercise-session-per-day plan is the best way to overcome the body's ability to drastically slow metabolism (and halt weight loss) in response to very low calorie regimens. Routine meal plans are included, plus a few recipes; and Miller's exercise tips are okay, if brief. The sketchy plan is filled out with Q&A sections (""Will your exercise get rid of cellulite?"") and power-of-positive-thinking hints (""Close your eyes and imagine that Sunday evening has arrived""). Those who don't mind diet-book hype might get by with this minimum of information; those who like diet-book hype may be just as glad to be let off light. For more complete programs, see Gutin's The High Energy Factor, Katahn's The 200 Calorie Solution, and Kuntzleman's Diet Free; for explanations of the approach, look to Bennett and Gurin's The Dieter's Dilemma and Polivy and Herman's Breaking the Diet Habit (above).
