AMERICA NEXT by Peter Markham

Email this review

Markham as a soldier in Europe during the last war, and since then as a business man representing an American firm, has known Europe well over twenty years, and foresaw the shape of things to come. His is a different approach from that of Gunther, Sheean, Tollschius, Duranty; he lacks their trained vigor and perceptiveness. But as an accurate observer, this is his record, as he surveys an England betrayed by man, by economic expediency; France, a house divided against itself; post war Germany, directionless, hungry, unemployed; the Balkans, Poland, Russia. Lastly the United States, and the need for a concerted and unified government.
