The book of an exile from Nazi Germany, his own story told in fiction form. An idyll in French Maritime Alps -- a sudden awakening to the cry of the homeland in peril -- the return to face the realities of violence, hate, Jew baiting and childbirth. The doubt as to who was friend, who foe -- and the growing doubt that the girl he loved had the courage to stand by. Then imprisonment -- and desertion. At last France, with the child, while the mother stays behind, still afraid. A book that has some of the human appeal of The Mortal Storm and written with the stark simplicity of Hemingway.
