It is doubtless salutary to have a book that presents -- as vividly as this does -- the case against the Congress Party in India, the truth behind what Muir, UP man, calls the Congress Party propaganda front. From Pearl Harbor to the end of 1942, the Muirs visited many parts of India, interviewed key people, stayed in hotels, in private homes, in princes' palaces, in official headquarters. Small space is given to criticism of Britain's failures; all credit is given to the generosity of the Cripps' proposal; the final presumption is that with freedom will come chaos; that the majority leaders care little for social progress, reform, minority rights. He sees India as a triangular problem. Gandhi alone of the leaders he did not meet, but sums him up as a ""fraud"".
