A queer, unaccountable book, evidently modern in fact, though the essential spirit and flavor is that of legendary material. A story of Transylvania, and of peasants ridden by superstition and prejudice and an abortive religious sense. The lovely daughter of a religious fanatic is feared and hated as a partner of the devil, which her half-crazed father tries to cast out, and she is saved by the village schoolmaster, who loves her in spite of knowing that she loves another. Neagoe is well known for his short stories, which have appeared for several years in such magazines as Story, Contact, and so on. A collection of these stories, STORM, was banned by the customs authorities last year, such to the dismay of the critics who who rank him high among the moderns.
