KIRKUS REVIEW

Transylvania peasants again -- a costume story, with full quota of food, customs, folk lore, etc. The story of a husky peasant whose thwarted love life determines him on emigration to America. Before he is well started Fate intervenes, in the shape of trouble with his eyes and the charms of his host's wife. Since his host can give her no child, he is complaisantly acquiescent to her having one by the visitor, whose stay is prolonged into years. Further complications -- and the death of both woman and child -- drive him forth -- and again he sets out for America. Neagoe's first novel was his best -- this seems unimportant.
