Mr. Putnam, who in Cast Off the Darkness (1957, p. 406), an adult book, wrote about his own struggles after having been blinded in an accident, presents an exciting, intelligent history of the Seeing Eye. In the first half, he outlines the formation of the first dog-guide school abroad, and its beginnings in this country in 1929. In the last part, the reader follows the process of dog-guide education from the time a litter of German shepherds is born, to the day when the blind people graduate from the school in Morristown, New Jersey, and return home with their dogs. The author's clear, concise style combined with his knowledge of the material, makes this a moving and educational book.
