Among the pieces in this roughhewn puzzler are: (1) the nationalistic Shah of Iran whose U.S.-subsidized missile installations are precipitating an imminent Soviet air strike, (2) an illegal cash-laundering organization which, currently under investigation by the FBI, might implicate both duped tax lawyer Stephen Grant and his Chief Executive cousin, (3) detentist President George Arnold who is himself ""consumed by dread"" and an inoperable tumor in the face of his final crisis.
