FLATTERY'S FOAL by Peter Shiraeff

Publisher: Knopf

The changes from old to new Russia are symbolized in the story of a mare, Flattery, and her foal. Trained by a penniless but gifted trainer, Flattery is sold to a Count who wishes to carry on her line, rather than to use her on the race track. Comes the Revolution -- Flattery falls to a simple peasant as a workhorse. But her value is recognized, she is bred to an American stallion, and the colt is discovered by her old trainer and ultimately wins the Moscow cup. As a horse story it is excellent; the double entendre, the stress on standards of old Russian and new, the lack of cohesion, the introduction of sordid detail -- all tend to take it out of the horse story market.
