BOB PETTIT: THE DRIVE WITHIN ME

Pettit, a forward with the St. Louis Hawks of the National Basketball Association, was the first pro to score 20,000 points, a leader of men and a good example to young people. He says so himself and it is not to be doubted, but it doesn't make very exciting reading. Basketball fans will learn some ""inside basketball"" and there are many anecdotes about famous players and noteworthy games. Every star seems to be uniformly praised, and Pettit even has kind words for the Hawks' owner who is noted for hiring and firing coaches as rapidly as a woman tries on hats. After retiring last year, Pettit planned a career in banking--starting as a vice president. He'll probably score big there, too. But his book won't touch John McPhee's A Sense of Where You Are about Bill Bradley (1965- p. 947) or Bill Russell's own Go Up For Glory (earlier in this issue).
