SHAWN'S RED BIKE

This pair's Shawn Goes to School was a Kate Greenaway honor book and those who admire their warm assurances won't question Shawn's quick acquisition of a red bike by saving his weekly ""pocket money"" (likely to be very little for one so young) and doing family chores for fifty cents a go. More realistic are Shawn's wobbly first attempts to ride and his final determination, which wins a skeptical crowd of neighborhood children, to go farther tomorrow. And Lloyd's gritty paintings (picture slabs of colored chalk on sandpaper, with the faces a shinier brown) certainly reinforce the optimistic outlook.
