Strength and simplicity mark all these poems, as if the Maine landscape that appears in so many of them had also shaped a whole way of seeing and speaking. Even the poems about poetry, marriage, city life, and explorations (whether geographical or otherwise--the art of Henry Moore, Wyeth, Marin) which are highly sophisticated in concept, are deceptively plain and relaxed in style. The descriptions of the landscapes come even closer to the conversational, a language so unobtrusive that the images of inlets and bays, gulls, boats, buoys and hill farms all appear to exist almost without the help of words. They evoke a world of sea and rock and the collection as a whole is fresh, open and exhilarating.
