This collection of Mexican tales seems to justify Philip Jordan's statement that stories are as plentiful in Mexico as monkeys in the jungle. Eighteen stories in all, they were collected by the author during his extensive stay in Mexico, from children, priests, policemen, peasants and other Mexican friends. They are folkloric in quality dealing fancifully with phenomena of nature, the stuff of which myths are made. Humorous, often dramatic, they reveal the Mexican mind and imagination in its capacity to contemplate at one time the earthy with the extraordinary.
