THE LAND AND ISLES OF GREECE: The Complete Vacation Guide for All Budgets

A factual compendium of information, including many things not readily available without considerable search, this has its uses for the traveler who knows his background history and mythology. For one who lacks these prerequisites, the book leaves much to be desired, for the space belatedly given to these facets of vacationing in Greece would seem to suggest their relative unimportance, as compared with the minutiae of travel data. It is quite evident that the author knows his subject and loves it, but somehow he fails to convey any emotional content. And to the informed traveler in Greece this is incredible if not unforgivable. To recognize what the book does contribute, there are these facts, competently marshalled: the usual requirements of transportation, costs, formalities, food, drink, how to fit your itinerary to your time and funds, and then, step by step, the classical landscape, the less well-known places, the motorist's guide, the yachtsman's guide, useful information--and all too briefly, the essence of history, mythology, religion and culture.
