Contact lenses enable Tony Ransom, a junior in high school, to play football in a California suburb. When he plays a good game as second string quarterback, Tony foresees an athletic future ahead until he learns the dismaying news that his family is to join his engineer father in Switzerland for a year. Somewhat reconciled when he learns football is played at the international school he will attend, Tony is shocked to discover the term refers to unfamiliar soccer. Learning to control the ball and his own temper, the boy comes to realize that as a goalkeeper he can combine his earlier quarterback skills and retain the use of his hands to play an equally demanding soccer game. In changing his mind about a runaway attempt, Tony makes a major adjustment to the demands of maturity. Mr. Harkins has written several other books for young sports and racing fans.
