A tennis story- and there are singularly few of them- with good writing, good timing of plot, a difficult theme for a well-sustained story. A big hunk of a football hero goes out for the Davis Cup team on a dare. With plenty of hard work, sheer guts and manly rage, he adds dynamite to country-club contests and upsets the tea party aspects of the polite tennis game. American courage, stamina, bulk and hard work win through the effete country club environment, and the high standards of physical and mental discipline are made vital components of an exciting sports story. In winning his place on the team, Jake Carson wins too his chance to go on to medical school. He learns that the game isn't a sisey game after all, and gives the team all he has to give. A good story on several counts.
