This is just what the title describes, a swiftly moving, easily read story of how that great upheaval which so changed the religious complexion of mankind came to pass. The traditional content of the faith is summed up as it was before the great challenge; the world as it came to be on the eve of the Reformation is described in picturesque fashion; the lives of those who are closely identified with the Reformation, Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Henry VIII, etc. are so set forth that their blemishes show as well as their zeal. It all makes the Reformation real and moving in a sense that history always intends to be but so often fails to realize. Mr. Hughes has no axe to grind; he gives a moving account of men and movements that have affected the lives of all so that the reader more clearly sees how it happened. A good book for those who are interested in the religious growth of mankind, but who have neither the time, patience nor equipment to search the sources.
