THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN PROSPERITY

An encouraging outlook for all concerned lies in the pages of an economic analysis describing the main trends in our country during the last century and a half, comparing the systems of other countries and pointing to measures that will insure the success of our already prevailingly good economic circumstances. To enlarge his main thesis- that supply and demand must be kept adjusted in increasingly even rates, and his prediction- that, if all goes well, increased productivity will lead to far greater real incomes in the future, Wernette follows this outline: a preliminary discussion of the nature of prosperity highlights good conditions here, such as the wise use of resources, and adverse conditions abroad, for example the low social position of business men- that have either created or detracted from high standards of living. Following then with a closer look at American economics, Wernette presents the many facets of money behaviour, government and private policy and, with these as background, offers his own advice on the establishment of a functional fiscal monetary system, based primarily on private enterprise but involving necessary counter-cyclical measures to be taken by the government in times of need, to insure a slumpless economy. Not a highly original work, debatable as to its social values such as prestige, but a sincere attempt to show the practicality of good living.
