The death of Philip Hale left unfinished his major work, a life of Vermeer. This book is the result of his research, and has been skilfully edited and rounded out by F. W. Coburn and R. T. Hale, who have introduced the volume with a tribute to Hale. The material does not follow conventional biographical lines but falls into chapters dealing with Delft, known facts of Vermeer's life, an and analysis of his method and his contribution to art. Throughout the text there are scattered ten beautiful reproductions in color. Following the text there is a section of monochrome reproductions of his best work, and a text catalogue of all his known works and their whereabouts. A definitive study.
