Lindsay was an Englishman and an artist, an impossible combination from the viewpoint of the people of Bellac. So why should he interfere with the supreme sacrifice accepted as his lot (as it had been of his forebears) by Philippe de Montfaucon? A suspense story in which an ancient pagan faith dominates a modern Christian community and ""the king must die"". Smoothly plotted, atmospheric, baffling, this is quite different from anything else Philip Loraine has done.
