Two years in India give this portrait painter many things to write about -- the English rule, the empty, toplofty isolation of the governmental circle, interesting native characters, the non-touristy wanderings he enjoyed. It's a rambling, personal account, spiced with a disrespect for the conventional, with a sensitive appreciation of a land which enthralled, while it irritated him. Entertaining.
