KIRKUS REVIEW

This collects, from the North and the South, from the last Christmas before the Civil War to the first peacetime Christmas after,- poetry, letters, newspaper and magazine and other sources, focusing on Christmas in the divisive years. Enlisted men and officers, General Robert E. Lee, Whitman, Joel Chandler Harris, reporters and men in the field write of the holiday they knew; there are pictures of the day in country and city and in the White House; there are menus and recipes for war time along with substitute foods used in the South; there is Santa Claus on both sides of the line. The selections will be illustrated with drawings and photographs of those years and the whole should head into the gift section with ease.
