A blend of suspense and atmosphere, with the story more important than its solution, Black Amber gains glamor from its Istanbul setting. Tracy Hubbard arrives to assist the reluctant Miles Radburn in sorting out the mess into which his notes for a prospective book on Turkish titles had fallen. Radbury- and the Turkish household in which he is working-wants no part of Tracy and no one suspects her identity and her reason for wanting the job. To accomplish her ends, Tracy takes many chances while the reader must accept just as many coincidences. Still this is a story with better than average characterization and motivation against a brightly colored background. A secondary market- suspense and mystery- or perhaps primary.
