THE PARTNERSHIP

Third rate story -- why dig deeper into the Bentley barrel? The point has certainly been made that her earlier novels do not rank with Inheritance. And this is, perhaps, the poorest of the lot. A novel of parallel lives, Lydia, of the clerical background and good works, and the girl she ""rescues"" from a philandering soldier, introduces into her household as maid of all work, and thereby throws open the door to a philandering cousin, who makes the best -- or worst -- of his opportunities. A pallid romance fades out. Lydia is forced to get her savor of life vicariously. Yorkshire background.
