Sword-saga of the war torn reigns of Charles I, Cromwell and Charles II, as seen through the eyes of a valiant, simple Yorkshire woman. Opening with her childhood, the interlocking histories of two neighboring families with that of Penninah, who is loved from childhood, by Francis Ferrand, of the lesser aristocracy, gay, footloose and charming, and by John Thorp, clothier, sober, slow moving. Then come the wars, the two men are on opposite sides; Penninah loves one man but has married the other, and then yields to her love and bears his child. A solid, and sometimes stolid tale; well-remembered pattern in authentic period props.
