NO SILVER BELLS

A hard book to place; somewhat delicate for the rental market, but not quite substantial enough for sales. Pleasant, responsive story of a woman's life, seen in retrospect, as she faces, at 40, the question of marriage. She is a landscape gardener, brought up in a lonely part of the Scottish Highlands, who had never married, because she could not bridge her world and that of the English worldling she loved. Then she becomes the companion to a poor doctor, with a promiscuous wife, and a child whose need appeals to the maternal in her. Finally, when she has achieved business success, she meets Carne -- and surveys her back life before reaching her decision on marriage.
