I could wish that Phyllis Fonnor had contributed more than just a too brief introduction -- and her own selective ability -- for this excellent collection of what is, probably, the favorite type of fairy tale -- in which the peasant boy wins the princess. Perhaps the roots of American democracy are rooted in this triumph! She's salted the old standbyes from Grimm and Anderson and the Lang collections with a sprinkling of our beloved Howard Pyle, and a few more modern story tellers, Margery Bianci, Parker illmore, Soumas MacManus. Of course any collection finds captious critics regretting the omission of certain favorites. I missed the princess of the glass hill! Pits illustrations are just right within the book -- but I thought the jacket too stylized.
