Joining the long and distinguished list of subjects anthologized by this editor, these are well chosen stories of the frontier. The writers included are top notch for craftsmanship and the broad appeal of the stories is underlined by the fact that many of the stories come from, and most of the writers still have entree to the pages of the popular magazines. Stephen Vincent Benet and Jim Kjelgaard (twice), Haycox, Mary Grace Chute, Richter, Guthrie and Fast are the writers included. The frontier existence in the east, midwest and west gives an idea of the spread of time covered in the stories as well as the spread of a nation. The stories are short and memorable. The writing shows each of these writers at home in this form and at his story-telling best.
