THE URANIUM PIRATES

Lacking the rapidly accelerating action of The Nightmare Rally or characters who take hold, this is further (or first?) sabotaged by inept translation: continuity is awkward, dialogue is stilted, colloquialisms are unnatural. Fourteen-year-old Nic, down from Paris to stay with his grandparents at the fishing village near the Spanish border, turns to uranium prospecting with the local scapegoat when his old gang bullies both of them. After a lucky find (which gives Nic and Tirepoux status) and a considerable stretch of rather futile feuding, the boys arrange a truce, the better to deal with evidence of smuggling in the area. It's all quite erratic, also forced, particularly the rise of Tirepoux to top dog--putty when it's not mud.
