MICHELANGELO'S WORLD

In expansive, uncluttered format that accommodates two columns of text and a wealth of detailed illustrations, an artist who has been responsible for many books on cultural subjects embraces a figure who must be especially close to his heart. Michelangelo reminiscences here as an old man--strong-minded, opinionated, with the authority of a great artist who was intimately involved in both the political and the artistic life of his time. In this excellent translation, the voice works very well, including fascinating anecdotes and an astonishing amount of detail on Michelangelo's artistic techniques, problems, and solutions as well as his ups and downs with Medicis and Popes. The illustrations wonderfully extend the text: showing the artist's work at different stages of completion, including bits of humor, mini-stories, and history--some of which is not mentioned. There are four pages of small, well-reproduced photos of the artist's work. A splendid introduction to a monumental figure.
