THE AFTERNOON CAT

To be sent to your room for refusing to eat. . . to look through your window at those across the way. . . to glimpse a cat's tail, then the whole cat, popping up in different people's apartments. . . . It's an intriguing situation, pictured with disarming modesty, and perhaps some will be charmed as well by the cat's dressing up in his owner's clothes and later, stripped and shamed, dropping in on the watching boy and inviting him to a Japanese movie. But the fantasy would be stronger without the little fancies and one-liners (sea urchin soup, a Portrait of the Cat as a Young Cat). Semicute.
