Sixteen year old Andy takes his father's place, to the best of his ability, in driving their herd of cattle to market in Baltimore, from their farm in Ohio. The time is 1810, and this trip of Andy's is one of the first of many such that were to form part of the opening up of the west. The story is a trifle overlong, and the mystery of the red-bearded man who threatens Andy grows tiresome before the end, but the book gives a good picture of the times, and of the people who lived by the roads and rivers and the journeymen who made their living among them.
